Introducing Solsbury Community Choir!

Solsbury Community Choir is a new, friendly mixed choir that welcomes all singing abilities, with an emphasis on singing for fun.

Taking place in Batheaston New Village Hall, the choir will meet every Monday during school term time from 7.30pm-8.45pm. We’ll be singing songs in a range of styles including folk, world music, gospel and pop, all designed to be easy to learn and uplifting to sing.

There’ll be no need to read music, as all songs will be taught by ear. Learning by ear is a great way to learn music, as it frees us up to enjoy the full experience without having to think too much about what’s written on the page.

Many people have a feeling that they ‘can’t sing’ or that singing somehow isn’t for them. But I believe strongly that we all have a voice, and that with the right encouragement we can find our voice and enjoy using it in the company of others.

Throughout history singing would have been an integral part of our community life – singing for work, celebration, joy, grief, worship, story telling and community occasions. I’m passionate about reclaiming some of these opportunities and bringing singing back into our lives. When we sing, it’s a chance to lose ourselves in something bigger than ourself, and make connections without the need for words.

My approach is for Solsbury Community Choir to be:

  • Inclusive – for all singing abilities, from complete beginners through to keen/regular singers

  • About our natural voices – songs taught ‘a cappella’ (just voices) and by ear

  • Mindful – with the emphasis on singing for fun within the group, rather than for performance

  • Supportive – a nurturing environment where everyone feels encouraged to have a go

If you like the sound of this, then why not come along? You can join us for a taster session (£7) at any point during the term. If you enjoy it and would like to carry on, then payment is in advance as a block for the remainder of the term. This approach means we can get to know each other and build on songs each week as we go through the term. You can pay on the door for your first session, or alternatively book online

Do please check out our Covid policy before coming along, and you might also like something warm to wear, as we’ll be keeping the room ventilated. Doors will open at 7.20pm for a 7.30pm start.

In the words of American philosopher and psychologist William James, “I don’t sing because I’m happy; I’m happy because I sing”.
