Forest Garden

A forest garden imitates deciduous woodland - trees and shrubs growing above small bushes, perennials and ground cover. The plants are selected to create a low maintenance, self-sustaining mixture that includes edibles, herbs, nature-friendly and practical varieties.

The Forest Garden is part of the Secret Garden next to the river and car park in Batheaston.

We began the transformation of a corner of the Secret Garden in March 2022 when the Parish Council leased the land to us and Bath and West Community Energy (BWCE) gave us a grant. It now has places to sit, a mud kitchen for young cooks, a bug hotel and a network of paths.

The garden is always open, and free for anyone to enjoy.

The Forest Garden group is managed via WhatsApp. We meet regularly in the Garden to do some tidying and maintenance while enjoying its special atmosphere.

At our meetup in February ‘25 we created a smart wattle fence around the dead hedge and did some general tidying. The garden gifted us some Jerusalem artichokes to take home and roast - delicious.
